Following over 900 nominations made by the public, more than 240 awards have been presented in the categories of Community Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (16-30 years old), Senior Citizen of the Year (65+ years old) and Active Citizenship (Group or Event), in ceremonies organised by Local Government.

Recipients have been recognised for contributions across a range of areas, including emergency services, youth support, the arts, mental health and advocacy of people from a culturally and linguistically diverse background.

In the City of Swan, WA 2024 Australian of the Year, Mechelle Turvey, received the Community Citizen of the Year Award. As Mechelle was in Canberra for the Australian of the Year Awards national ceremony, her mother Liz, who Mechelle has called one of her biggest inspirations, accepted the Community Citizen of the Year Award on her behalf.

Following the announcement of the City of Perth’s 2024 Community Citizens of the Year, Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said, “The Community Citizen of the Year Awards recognise inspirational people and groups who have contributed to our diverse City community. The winners and all those nominated should be truly proud of their achievements.”

For 22 years, the Community Citizen of the Year Awards has been recognising those who make a positive impact in their community.
