Australia’s Democracy and You

An informative, inspiring and interactive 2-hour workshop presented in partnership with the Constitutional Centre of Western Australia and the WA Electoral Commission Education Office.

Understanding our values, rights and responsibilities as Australian citizens; how our system of government works, and what each level of government is responsible for; and why we put numbers on our election ballot papers instead of ticking boxes are all really important parts of Australian citizenship.

It’s why Auspire – Australia Day Council WA, the Constitutional Centre of WA and the WA Electoral Commission have partnered together to support the community with a highly informative workshop, which we hope will empower and inspire you to discover the important role you play in shaping our collective democratic future.

Australia’s Democracy and You  is interactive, engaging and informative workshop and in just 2 hours you will learn about:

  • The concept of Active Citizenship
  • Our Australian values
  • The Australian Constitution
  • The roles and responsibilities of our three levels of government
  • Our parliamentary system
  • Features of a strong democracy
  • Your right and responsibility to vote
  • How to enroll to vote, and
  • Making your vote count in our preferential voting system.

With more than 190 countries, speaking approximately 270 languages and dialects including around 50 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, WA one of the most diverse, multicultural states in Australia and many of us have not had access to the civics and citizenship curriculum taught in our schools today.
