Right time for conversation on First Nations’ Voice

  • 13 November 2022

Auspire – Australia Day Council WA supports the Commonwealth Government with its intent to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full.

In providing support, Auspire – Australia Day Council WA seeks to demonstrate its commitment to ensuring an equitable society for all.

“Auspire acknowledges and supports the ongoing consultation and engagement with First Nations people to build consensus for the approach.

“We will, at all times act as an ally to the process, be a facilitator for all voices to be heard and, where appropriate provide a platform for respectful debate,” said Morgen Lewis, CEO of Auspire – Australia Day Council WA.

Bradley Woods, Chairman of Auspire – Australia Day Council WA said, “This is the right time for our Nation to be having this conversation and Auspire is privileged to have a unique opportunity to play a role in what will be described as a transformative process in the history of Australia.”

The Uluru Statement was born at the First Nations Convention held at Uluru in May 2017 and attended by 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander delegates.

It is an incredibly personal and important proclamation that calls on the people of Australia to support constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples through the following three actions:

  1. Constitutional reforms to empower First Nations’ people to take their rightful place in our country
  2. The establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution
  3. A Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations, and truth-telling about our history.

The Albanese Government has made a commitment to implementing the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full.

Since its election in May 2022, the Commonwealth Government has made significant progress to bring to the people of Australia a referendum to enshrine a First Nations’ Voice in the Constitution as the first part of the Statement’s request of Voice, Treaty, and Truth.
