Racism myths and misconceptions unpacked

  • 16 July 2025

The Australian Human Rights Commission has broken down five common myths and misconceptions about racism, under the Racism. It Stops With Me campaign.

In unpacking each one, a new suite of factsheet resources is available to uncover how these myths and misconceptions distort understanding and prevent meaningful change. The factsheets explain how the myths occurred and how they continue to influence.

The resources have been created to support and expand on the Myths & Misconceptions education guide, which was published in 2024.

The Commission identifies and explores the five most common myths and misconceptions as:

  • The misconception that racism is only about individual actions and beliefs
  • The myth of meritocracy
  • The misconception of not “seeing” race
  • The myth that “racism is a thing of the past”
  • Misconceptions about anti-racism.
