Professor Lyn Beazley AO launches innovative STEAM program for autistic adolescents in Western Australia

  • 17 April 2025

Eminent neuroscientist, former WA Chief Scientist and WA 2015 Australian of the Year, Professor Lyn Beazley AO, has announced the launch of a ground-breaking new initiative designed to create unique and enriching opportunities for adolescents living with autism in Western Australia.

The Lyn Beazley Academy offers a specialised, STEAM-focused program for young people aged 15 to 17, centred on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. With a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, innovation and real-world learning, the Academy provides an alternative pathway to university or vocational education through industry engagement and project-based exploration.

Firmly grounded in a Western Australian context, the program however connects participants with thought leaders and professionals internationally. This gives students the opportunity to develop meaningful networks, explore cutting edge, emerging fields and engage in learning tailored to their interests and pace. Small group settings enable personalised experiences that foster confidence, capability and curiosity.

“At the heart of our mission lies a profound commitment to cultivating a nurturing and inclusive environment – one where every student is empowered to discover and illuminate their unique brilliance,” says Professor Lyn Beazley. “We believe that true impact begins with a deep sense of belonging and a connection to both one’s innate gifts and the wider world. In fostering this connection, we enable our young people to not only imagine a better future, but to create it.”

The inaugural pilot for 15 to 17-year-olds will begin in mid-2025, with limited places available. In January 2026, the Academy will expand to include a new pilot stream for 12 to 15-year-olds, widening access to these opportunities across the state.
