NAIDOC Week 2024 puts the spotlight on Aboriginal culture and achievements

  • 12 July 2024

From awards to workshops, NAIDOC Week has put a deserving spotlight on the stories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Taking place from 7-14 July, the 2024 theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud’, and looks to honour the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture.

The annual NAIDOC Awards preceded the official week on 6 July with Western Australians recognised including Balladong/Wadjuk Elder of the Noongar Nation, Mr Kim Collard, named Male Elder of the Year, and Bunbury boxer, Alex Winwood, recognised as Sportsperson of the Year. WA-born artist, Naarah, received the Creative Talent Award, which follows her recognition in the 2024 Australian of the Year Awards as Young Australian of the Year for Tasmania, where she grew up.

Meanwhile, Auspire was pleased to provide individuals from not-for-profits, local government and corporate business the opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal culture and history, at a highly anticipated workshop in the days leading up to NAIDOC Week. Presented by Danny Ford OAM, participants gained insight into traditions, protocols and values of the rich Noongar culture, with personal stories from Danny himself.

There are still plenty of opportunities to participate in NAIDOC Week before it ends on 14 July. In WA, you can view the artwork of Pitjantjatjara artist, Jorna Newberry, and others at Linton & Kay Galleries in Subiaco; plant a bushtucker garden in Kalamunda; and explore Noongar language in Albany.
