My Australian Story: Tani Saha
A powerhouse of cultural expression and celebration as visionary of Gurukul WA, Tani Saha shares her story of community involvement that led her to be recognised by City of Canning as its 2024 Community Citizen of the Year.
My journey to becoming an Australian is one deeply rooted in the values of community, cultural preservation, and a passion for making a difference. Coming to Australia after living in different part of the world, I was drawn to the rich tapestry of cultures, its commitment to egalitarianism, and the opportunity it offers to build a life grounded in freedom and respect.
As I settled in, I found that Australia is a place where diverse stories intertwine, creating a unique and inclusive national identity. My story became one of contributing to this collective narrative by celebrating and sharing my cultural heritage through initiatives like Gurukul WA. I felt a strong sense of responsibility to not only preserve my own cultural traditions, but also to create spaces where others could do the same, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the many cultures that make up our community.
Over time, my involvement in community activities grew. I began to see the power of cultural expression as a means of bringing people together, bridging gaps between generations, and promoting social harmony. The recognition I received, including being named the City of Canning’s Citizen of the Year, affirmed the impact of these efforts and motivated me to continue working towards a more inclusive and connected community.
Being a part of Australia has also been about embracing new opportunities and challenges. I’ve learned that the Australian spirit is one of resilience, openness, and a willingness to lend a hand to others. This ethos has shaped my approach to community work, where collaboration and support are key.
Through my journey, I have come to appreciate the significance of being part of Australia’s story. It’s about contributing to a narrative that values diversity, respects different cultural expressions, and strives for a society where everyone feels they belong. My hope is that, through my work and the ongoing efforts of many others, we can continue to build an Australia where every story is heard, and every culture is celebrated.
My story reflects a commitment to community, cultural preservation, and the shared values that make Australia a unique and welcoming place to call home.
