Maryann Tsai: Empowering Women to March Forward

When Maryann Tsai was 10 years old, her father made the decision to uproot the family in search of better education and future opportunities in Australia.
As many culturally and linguistically diverse migrants can attest to, while Australia offered a promising new beginning, Maryann admits that “adjusting to a new language, culture, and environment was challenging. The initial years were isolating due to language barriers, frequent school changes, and moving homes, making it difficult to form lasting friendships.”
As she progressed into adulthood, Maryann was faced another hurdle: the transition between university and employment.
Inspired by her own experiences and challenges as a migrant woman in Australia, with the resilience and determination to succeed, Maryann Tsai has formed and grown a not-for-profit that supports and uplifts other women who are in a similar position today.
In 2022, Reach Her Inc was born to provide training and employment pathway programs, so that women – regardless of their background – had the opportunity and empowerment to thrive. Initiatives include the Reach Her Inc. Business School, which offers a structured 12-week program designed to equip women with essential business skills, through coaching and entrepreneurial training, that can assist with launching their business. In February this year, the EmpowerHer Mentorship Program was launched to provide further support for new business owners, including confidence building and setting goals, through online sessions with experienced mentors.
“I’m passionate about helping others – especially women – navigate challenges and seize opportunities in business and leadership. Both programs focus on empowering women by providing the skills, support, and community they need to thrive in business and leadership.
“So far, we have supported over 800 women through wellbeing and employment pathway programs, providing 2,050 hours of paid work in 2024 alone. Through advocacy, mentorship, and community programs, we have made lasting change.”
For her contribution and impact as Founder and CEO of Reach Her Inc, Maryann was named as City of South Perth’s 2025 Community Citizen of the Year.
“I feel deeply humbled and grateful, knowing that the work I’ve done has made a positive impact on the community. It’s a testament to the efforts of so many people who have supported Reach Her Inc and collaborated with me.
“Nominating someone for the Citizen of the Year Award is a way to recognize and honor their outstanding contributions to the community. It’s a powerful way to celebrate individuals or groups who have made a lasting impact – whether through volunteer work, charitable efforts, or inspiring leadership.”

Big change starts with small, consistent actions. You don’t need all the answers or resources upfront. Begin by volunteering, mentoring, or launching a small initiative – momentum will follow. - Build a Support Network
Surround yourself with like-minded people who share your vision. Collaboration with organizations, mentors, and changemakers can amplify your impact. Reach out, ask for help, and offer support – change is never made alone. - Embrace Challenges as Learning Opportunities
Challenges – lack of funding, setbacks, self-doubt – will come, but resilience is key. Learn from failures, adapt, and keep going. Growth happens outside your comfort zone. - Lead with Authenticity and Integrity
People connect with real stories and genuine efforts. Stay true to your mission, remain ethical, and always prioritize impact over recognition. - Empower Others Along the Way
True impact isn’t just about what you achieve, it’s about how you uplift others. Create opportunities, share knowledge, and inspire others to step up and lead. - Stay Patient and Persistent
Change doesn’t happen overnight. Celebrate small wins, stay committed, and trust the process. Every effort, no matter how small, creates ripples that can turn into waves of transformation.
