Inspiring Australians embrace local communities and welcome new citizens on Australia Day
In the spirit of sharing stories and celebrating active citizenship on Australia Day, Auspire arranged for 22 members of our Inspiring Australians’ Network to visit towns and cities across WA, to share their own personal journeys and help recognise local community members who are making a positive difference.
The Australia Day Ambassadors travelled the length and breadth of the state, from Alzheimer’s researcher, Professor Ralph Martins AO, in Broome, to Nick Hudson, founder of The Push-Up Challenge, in Esperance.
While the visits enabled local people to hear their inspiring stories, it also gave Ambassadors an opportunity to immerse themselves in the local community.
Cyber educator and inclusion advocate, Jawaria Mahmood, was able to witness the “close-knit community where everyone knew each other” in Northam, while No Limits Perth co-founder, Janine Wood (pictured above second left), started her weekend in Mandurah with a traditional Smoking Ceremony before the main event on the foreshore.
On his visit to Esperance, Nick Hudson said: “There’s something special about the way people come together in Esperance – whether it’s through local initiatives, supporting one another, or simply sharing a sense of connection to this beautiful place. And did I mention the world-class beaches?! The sand is like flour under your feet.”
Nick, along with many other Ambassadors, helped to announce the local council’s 2025 Community Citizens of the Year, in a celebration of local active citizenship. Ambassadors were also chosen to deliver the keynote address at citizenship ceremonies, to inspire new citizens by recognising the opportunities and importance of active citizenship.
Reflecting on her address, primary school teacher, Lueth Garang, who came to Australia aged 11 as a refugee, said: “It was an incredible honour to speak at the City of Subiaco’s Citizenship Ceremony. As an Australia Day Ambassador, I had the privilege of sharing my personal journey – a story of resilience, courage, hope and transformation – with the newly Australian citizens. In that moment, I reflected on how far we’ve all come and the strength we draw from our shared experiences. It’s a privilege to be part of such an important day for these new citizens as they take the next step in their Australian journey.”
