Civics and Citizenship Program set to strengthen understanding in Australia’s Democracy

  • 18 March 2026

On the evening of Tuesday 17 March as part of WA Harmony Week, Auspire – Australia Day Council WA launched the Civics and Citizenship Recognition and Education Program aimed at strengthening civic understanding and participation in Western Australia.

The program has been co-designed by the Office of Multicultural Interests, Auspire, and members of Western Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. It recognises that active citizenship and a sense of belonging set the foundation for social cohesion and provides opportunities to strengthen understanding of Australia’s democratic principles and systems.

The initiative is a dual pillar program, which combines civic education with recognition of active citizenship through Auspire’s state-based and national award programs. The education stream – Australia’s Democracy and You – delivered in partnership with the Constitutional Centre of Western Australia and the Western Australian Electoral Commission, builds practical understanding of Australia’s Constitution, government systems, voting processes, and creates confidence and pathways for meaningful participation.

Minister Buti said the initiative reflects the importance of accessible civic understanding.

“This program recognises that meaningful participation in Australia’s democracy begins with understanding.

“By strengthening civic knowledge, we are promoting social cohesion and supporting people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to see themselves as active and valued contributors to our shared civic life.”

Chief Executive Officer of Auspire, Morgen Lewis, said the program represents an important step in strengthening civic confidence across diverse communities.

“At Auspire, we believe active citizenship is foundational to a cohesive society. This program supports people to understand how our democracy works, participate with confidence, and have their contributions recognised as part of the Australian story.”

The launch brought together leaders from culturally diverse community organisations, delivery partners, government representatives and key stakeholders from collaborating organisations.
