Australian of the Year 2026 call for nominations now open

  • 23 June 2025

On Wednesday 11 June, more than 100 industry and community leaders joined Australian of the Year alumni to launch the 2026 Australian of the Year nominations’ campaign.

They had the privilege of hearing from WA’s inspiring 2025 Australian of the Year recipients, including Br Olly Pickett AM who entertained all with stories of his new-found fame and experiences since being named the national 2025 Senior Australian of the Year.

Brother Olly said that receiving the award has been both incredibly humbling yet at the same time exciting, not just for him but for all the extraordinary volunteers at Wheelchairs for Kids.

“In my acceptance speech live on the television to all the people around Australia watching, I said that it takes $275 to make a fully adjustable wheelchair for a child, which can take them through to adolescence, and within 24 hours, we were being flooded with $275 donations!” exclaimed the 2025 Senior Australian of the Year.

The Australian of the Year Awards celebrate extraordinary Australians who make a profound impact on lives, communities and society right around our nation. Their challenges and triumphs, often reaching beyond professional achievements, reflect each recipient’s unique story.

“These awards acknowledge Australians who have contributed to our communities, advocated for issues of national importance, or brought about significant change that has the potential to make our society better.  Importantly they help us feel connected to a national identity we may be proud of.” said Morgen Lewis CEO Auspire – Australia Day Council WA in her campaign launch address.

“From volunteers to scientists, philanthropists to farmers, doctors, dancers, sporting heroes, authors, artists, activists and pretty much everyone in between; they are the people who inspire us to make our own contribution and feel proud to be Australian.” she added.

Every day, all around Australia, extraordinary people create moments that inspire. By putting someone forward, a nomination says the efforts of a fellow Australian have not gone unnoticed. It only takes one nomination to elevate their voice, help them access more support or simply give them the recognition they deserve.

The campaign launch was held in collaboration with Auspire Silver Member organisation and partner CERI – Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation. In his closing address, Charlie Bass – CERI Founder, Executive Chairman and WA’s 2024 Senior Australian of the Year, reflected on the impact of time in the program and encouraged all to nominate someone for these prestigious Awards. “Let’s shine a light on the incredible work being done across our communities” he said as he welcomed people to stay, network and enjoy the CERI hospitality.

Nominations for the 2026 Australian of the Year Awards Nominations are open until midnight (AEST) 31 July 2025. Visit australianoftheyear.org.au to learn more about the Awards and nominate someone who inspires you.
