Becoming an Elected Member of Local Government.

7 June 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

If you are passionate about your local community, want to ensure that community perspectives are heard and to influence change, you might like to consider becoming a local government councillor.

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) Local Government Division and Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI) are hosting a free forum for culturally and linguistically diverse individuals interested in becoming local government councillors. The forum will cover the role and responsibilities of a councillor and provide information on how to become a candidate.

Session topics include:

  • the work of local governments
  • the role and responsibilities of local government councillors
  • what knowledge and skills are important
  • how to campaign and encourage people to vote for you.

The session also includes Question & Answer time to give you the opportunity to ask councillors about their experiences in the role and how you can become a candidate.

The forum will be introduced by the Minister for Local Government, Hon John Carey MLA, and feature a panel of serving councillors from CaLD backgrounds. Registration is required as places are limited.
