Auspire – Australia Day Council WA presents an Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Workshop. Aboriginal Cultural Awareness is about having some knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal People’s histories, Values, Belief Systems, Experiences and Lifestyles. Delivered by Noongar leader, Danny Ford OAM, within a within a culturally safe and inclusive framework, this workshop also explores the impacts of colonisation and how these still play out today with our First Nations’ Peoples and mainstream Australia.
This session is a great entry level for those starting out their Aboriginal Cultural Competency journey. The session will assist participants with information and understanding that can improve communities and workplaces for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. Basic Aboriginal cultural awareness and understanding can facilitate real and lasting change through changed attitudes and behaviours at both a professional and personal level.
The session will cover the following material
- Explore barriers between Aboriginal peoples and non-Indigenous Australians
- Significant moments in history that have shaped the way Aboriginal Australians are today.
- Cultural beliefs, customs and values and their role in Australian society.
- Contemporary vs traditional lifestyles, connection to country, community and kinship systems.
- The importance of self-determination and identity.

The session is facilitated by Mr Danny Ford OAM, a Noongar man and senior traditional custodian of Wadjuk Country, with connections to the wider Noongar Country and Aboriginal communities across Western Australia.
